How we chose these listings. Every listing is free; nobody paid to appear, and order is not for sale. We started from open map data, then checked in October 2026 that each business’s website works and shows this location, and that each physical therapy and chiropractic clinic matches an active record in the federal NPI registry. Being listed is not a recommendation: check credentials, prices and insurance yourself. Own a business listed here? Email hello@protocolarchive.com and we will correct or remove your listing. Physical therapists in Washington, DC

Outpatient physical therapy clinics. Each one matched an active record in the federal NPI registry when we checked.

Can you see a physical therapist without a referral in the District of Columbia? Yes. DC law defines physical therapy as the independent evaluation or treatment of injury, disability or disease, so you can see a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s referral. APTA lists one condition: the therapist must refer you to a primary care provider if you make no reasonable progress within 30 days. Insurance plans may still have their own rules. Medicare, for example, requires a doctor or other qualified provider to certify that you need therapy.31,32,33

Frequently asked questions

Where can I walk on flat, paved paths in Washington, DC?

Good options are the National Mall, the paved Capital Crescent Trail from Georgetown, and, across the river, the paved Mount Vernon Trail, which is mostly flat for about 18 miles. The Hains Point loop in East Potomac Park is another popular choice. All of these let you turn around whenever you like.

Is there a free running track open to the public in DC?

Yes. DC Public Schools opens its school tracks for free personal exercise during the school year: early mornings and late afternoons on weekdays, and 8 am to 5 pm at weekends. Tracks close during school activities, permitted events and holidays.

Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist in DC?

No. DC allows direct access, but a therapist must refer you to a primary care provider if you have made no reasonable progress within 30 days. Check your insurance first, because some plans, including Medicare, need a provider to certify your therapy before they cover it.

Where can I exercise indoors for free in DC in winter or summer heat?

DC residents can use the Department of Parks and Recreation fitness centers and its 11 year-round indoor pools at no charge (bring photo ID). Residents aged 60 and over can also join exercise classes at the city’s Senior Wellness Centers.
